If We Were Having Coffee 1

coffeeIf we were having coffee, it would be made from freshly-ground whole beans.

I’d tell you that even though I only quit smoking 12 hours ago, I’m already feeling the need to claw at my face. But I’m hoping to stick it out because I’ve promised my wife a picnic on the moon. That means I have to stick around until space travel gets inexpensive enough for there to be greenspace on the moon.

I’d tell you I have an amazing grandson who’s six. He pretends to be a dog and communicates in “woofs,” sometimes for an hour at a stretch. One woof means no. Two woofs is yes, and three, “I love you.” Four woofs means “I’m hungry.” I can’t remember what five woofs means at the moment, but too many woofs to count means “I hate you,” and nice puppies don’t say that. The woofs can also be used for counting.

I’d tell you it’s been too long since I wrote any fiction, and I’ve set a deadline for starting that back up, even if it means these blogs I’ve worked seven months to get off the ground have to post five days a week instead of every day.

I’d tell you, too, that the social media network my friends and I have built over the last six months means a lot to me. It impresses the hell out of me, not because of its size, but because of the number of people who like or share our work, and take the time to stop by and comment often. I’d tell you I feel like I’m not keeping my end up sometimes and that I’m trying to figure out how to find the time to like and comment on more blogs.

I’d tell you this little blog is never far from my mind, despite the fact that my attention is elsewhere most of the time.

(Note – I haven’t decided for sure that this will post here every Saturday. I may move it around. But I it fits here, and I’m sure this is the best place for the first installment.)

  1. Of all the different blogs you people do, I have to say, ‘If we were having coffee’ is my favorite. It’s great to learn about the people in this intricate Sourcerer web.

Thanks! It’s not a hard post to write, really, and I was happy to finally share an image of the little fellow on a blog. I’m very particular about those – don’t want to post anything that shows his face, but he knows I post things on the internet and begs me to put him online.

Diana got me into these, but they just seem like such a good idea. This blog’s been a bit dormant this month, but I’m beginning to rehabilitate it.

You’re welcome, and thanks for the compliment. These are apparently something bloggers do on Saturdays, and I like them. This was quick to write, and it’s one of those posts that helps give the blog the personality we were discussing on your thread earlier.

And it’s nice to be able to share a bit about my family now and then.

Love hearing about all these quirky little things – it makes a “blogger” into a human. My kids like to pretend they are animals and I frequently find myself engaged in kitten, puppy, and even mongoose conversations. Good luck with that – it does NOT get old fast (to a 6-year old.)

I am quite happy, while I search through the linen closet for our big picnic basket. Oh yeah and a woof, woof, woof to you Dear Writer.

  6. Glad you decided to use this format. My husband and I quit smoking and started vaping 8 days ago. We’re not even remotely interested in smoking, and we’re not clawing at our faces or anything, just FYI 🙂
I haven’t worked on any fiction since about Valentine’s Day. But I roll with it. Or I lack discipline. Whatever, I’m not ashamed, lol!
I liked this post — I wonder how many woofs that is?

Lol, I’m not sure how many woofs that would be. Discipline was my problem for years. That and confidence, and the fact that most of the jobs I’ve had have been writing-intensive, and it’s hard to come home and keep writing when you do it all day.

I’m not ashamed, necessarily, but I have a project that was gaining momentum last summer and I put it aside to build the social network. I originally thought I’d have to focus on just the blogging for a whole year, but we’re way ahead of where I thought we’d be, and I’m hoping we’ll have them to the point where they aren’t taking all my writing time by the end of the summer.

Never tried the vaping, but I’ve thought about it. I’m using the gum.

  7. I love that, “a picnic on the moon!” Best of luck on the smoking cessation. You will be so glad you did it! I quit many many years ago and my mother just quit about 3 years ago, cold turkey after smoking since she was a teen.

My daughter is five and I love this age and their little creative minds, your grandson barking to communicate is hilarious! Hope you have a wonderful Sunday!

Thanks! Vicki came up with the picnic on the moon years and years ago, and it’s one of those things you just don’t forget.

Hope you have a great Sunday, too.

  8. Hang in there — although a picnic on the moon sounds lovely. You may still decide to take her there afterall. With all the $$$ you’ll save from not buying cigs, you may be able to afford it in a few years…

Hang in there, you’ll make it!

I’m looking forward to your fiction endeavor. Since I’ve gotten serious about that this year, I’ve been enjoying linking up with other writers. If there are sci-fi writers on wordpress they’re hiding, though — not using the natural tags like “sci-fi writer” or “SF writer.” I’m finding a ton of Australian YA fantasy writers though for some unknown reason.
